PipeT is developed and maintained by the VU University Amsterdam as part of a text mining system developed within the KYOTO project, which is co-funded by the European Union.
The origin of the name is still a mystery. Some say it is derived from the Dutch word pipet, a high-precision device for transporting liquid. Some say it is an abbreviation of Pipeline-based Infrastructure for Portable Embedded Technology. And some say the name was inspired by the phrase you got piped which became common at some point within the KYOTO project, referring to you got pwned, a phrase which has been popular in internet culture for years. The real answer may never be revealed...
